At 3rd Wave Counseling, our practice philosophy is rooted in the third wave of behavioral science—a modern approach to therapy that recognizes something deeply human- 

 

Life can be painful, and trying to get rid of that pain often makes it louder.

 

Third wave DBT invites a different path, one grounded in acceptance, mindfulness, and values-based action. Instead of fighting emotions or judging yourself for having them, you learn how to slow down, notice what’s happening inside, and respond with intention.

Unlike traditional therapies that focus primarily on changing thoughts or eliminating emotional distress, third wave DBT helps you change your relationship with your thoughts, emotions, and life experiences. Clients often discover that healing doesn’t come from forcing feelings away, but from learning how to experience them safely, skillfully, and with compassion—while still moving toward the life they want to live.

Emotional pain is a normal part of being human.

Avoiding or fighting emotions often increases suffering. 

Skills must be applicable in real life to be effective. 

Our approach walks the delicate line between acceptance and change—honoring where you are while gently helping you grow. We focus on building psychological flexibility, emotional regulation, and resilience, so even when stress or pain remains part of the story, it no longer defines it. Instead of waiting for life to become easier, clients learn how to move through life with steadiness, skill, and self-trust.

This philosophy is especially powerful for those carrying the weight of trauma, intense emotions, or painful relationship patterns. When emotions feel overwhelming or life feels unmanageable, third wave DBT offers a way forward—one that restores balance, strengthens connection, and makes healing possible, even in the midst of complexity.
